BANFF

Banff City Guide

Banff is a mountain town and popular tourist destination in the province of Alberta, Canada. It is situated within Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies and is located 126 km west of the city of Calgary and 58 km east of Lake Louise.

Known for its stunning mountain scenery and hot springs, development of Banff started in 1883. Then a siding on the new trans Canada railway known as Siding 29, three Canadian Pacific Railway workers discovered an underground cave containing a hot spring on the side of Sulphur Mountain.

In 1885, the federal government set a side a small reserve around the hot springs. Recognizing the commercial potential, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the federal government promoted Banff as a tourist destination and spa. As the railway brought more visitors to Banff, many businesses opened along Banff's main thoroughfare, Banff Avenue. In 1888, the Canadian Pacific Railway built the Banff Springs Hotel to accommodate the town's visitors.

Today, Banff plays host to millions of visitors every year who come to the town to take in the spectacular scenery and trails, bathe in the hot springs pool or to spend some time in Banff's many shops, bars and restaurants.

During winter months, skiers and snowboarders flock to the three ski hills in close proximity to Banff at Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise. While each requires a commute by car or bus, Banff is a popular choice as a base because of its good choice of accommodation and amenities.
